I didn’t watch the film until the end. What I saw was that the city he lived in was built during the USSR, and he himself lives within the legacy of forced resettlements. He is young and does not understand the trauma of collectivism, which is actually felt even more strongly by his peers who live in cities built during the imperial period or before it.

When the issue of Crimea was not softened by Ukraine itself through its connection with Belarus, aggression accumulated and the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv flared up again with renewed force. Pavel’s mother experienced the trauma of collectivism and could not have held a different opinion, while Pavel himself was deprived of grounding and a sense of purpose. There is no trauma if one comes from a Soviet-built city.

The nature of this conflict is evolutionary, and therefore it is so important to find acceptance of it from abroad. Otherwise, people like Pavel will continue to feel deprived of meaning until perspectives arrive from unexpected directions and force others — even countries like the United Kingdom — to understand.

This is not aggression; it is the defense of tradition as it exists — both in post-imperial Britain and in Russia. The question is whether Russia is allowed to be seen in its former form — populous, complex, and so on.

I do not know whether this film deserves an Oscar, as I did not watch it to the end.

Я не стал смотреть фильм до конца. Я увидел, что город, в котором он жил, был построен при СССР, и он сам живёт наследием насильственных переселений. Он молод и не понимает травму коллективизма, которая ещё сильнее ощущается его сверстниками, живущими в городах, построенных при империи или до неё.

Когда проблематика Крыма не была смягчена самой Украиной через связь с Беларусью, накопилась агрессия, и конфликт между Москвой и Киевом вспыхнул с новой силой. Мама Павла испытала травму коллективизма и не могла иметь иного мнения, а сам Павел был лишён почвы и смысла существования. Травмы нет, если человек вырос в советском городе.

Характер конфликта носит эволюционный характер, и поэтому так важно найти его принятие за рубежом. Иначе такие люди, как Павел, будут ощущать себя лишёнными смысла, пока кто-то извне, с той стороны, откуда этого не ждали, не придёт и не принесёт им картину происходящего, заставив понять даже такие страны, как Великобритания.

Это не агрессия — это защита традиции, каковой она существует и в постимперской Великобритании, и в России. Вопрос лишь в том, хотят ли Россию видеть в её прежнем виде — многолюдной и сложной.

Я не знаю, достоин ли этот фильм «Оскара», так как не посмотрел его до конца.
